We are celebrating Black November with 10-30% selected items!

Why we love celebrating Bastille

Bastille! A day celebrated annually almost everywhere in the world.

It will come as no surprise that Franchhoek in the Western Cape is also decorated in blue, white, and red in celebration of this historic event. The streets come alive with the smell of freshly baked French inspired pastries, fashion, music, and art. Let’s be honest, nothing makes you feel quite as ‘Frenchy’ as a fresh croissant and a red barrette. Then of course, our name, Penchant is of French origin.

There is much to be celebrated and many ways to do so but, the best place to be on 14 July is without a doubt Franchhoek. Celebrations continue through the weekend which includes wine tastings, designer jewellery from Penchant and delicious cuisine.

In the collage below you will see diamond, sapphire and ruby jewellery, all designed by Penchant.

Most refer to Bastille as a French National Day that it is a celebration of the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on July 14 1789, and commemorates the official beginning of the French Revolution.

French Revolution and Jewellery

The French revolution in 1789 affected jewellery wearing and production greatly. Escaping a fearful time when even the possession of jewellery or belt buckles could lead to the guillotine, there was a prevailing need for a new fashion. The new emerging styles reflected the dramatic change society had gone through, signalling the new philosophy of ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité’ (liberty, equality, fraternity).

Penchant might not have a range which has been inspired by Queen Marie Antoinette of Frances’ jewellery but, we definitely have designer pieces that would have ended up in her collection. We have picked out some of our ruby, diamond and sapphire rings, a bracelet, earrings and a necklace we thought the Queen would love to wear.

Take a look at our bedazzling fine jewellery, fit for a queen.
